Crying is how babies communicate but we become frustrated not knowing the reason. If you are a first time parent then the level of frustration and anxiety rise’s as everything is new to you.
What is Shaken baby syndrome (SBS) ?
Shaken baby syndrome also known as abusive head trauma, shaken impact syndrome, inflicted head injury or whiplash shake syndrome is a serious brain injury resulting from forcefully shaking an infant or toddler.
Why is it happening?
It is because babies and toddlers have weak neck muscles, relatively big heavy heads and underdeveloped brains.While shaking, the brain slams and froth inside the skull resulting in bleeding around the brain and also permanent damage.

Going through a bumpy road in a stroller or in a car seat, bouncing your baby to sleep, minor falls, rough play won’t cause shaken baby syndrome.
shaken baby syndrome is a deliberate action of forced shaking.
Symptoms and signs vary from mild to severe:
-Breathing problems
-Lethargic eyes
-Convulsions (seizures)
-Decreased alertness
-Fussiness or uncontrolled crying
-Cool, pale, or blue skin
-Poor feeding
-Weakness, sleepiness
- Unconsciousness
- Vomiting
- Rolling eyes.
- Inability to lift his/her head
It may only take 1 or 2 hard shakes to seriously injure a small child.
There are long term effects also like Cerebral palsy, blindness, permanent disability etc.
Prevention:
*Parental awareness classes because the only way to prevent shaken baby syndrome is by educating adults.
*Bring up ideas to soothe your babies like taking a walk, white noises, a warm bath, soft music, feeding, changing napkin and try to burp your baby often.
*Young infants should have their head supported at all times.
*Caregivers should avoid jostling or throwing them in air while playing with them.
*If other people helps you to take care of your child whether a babysitter, sibling or grandparent make them aware about the dangers of shaken baby syndrome.
*Parents should also notice that a baby who cries a lot may have a medical disorder and needs to consult a doctor.
*Never leave a baby with a babysitter , friend or family member that you think might lose control.
*Always have a background check before entrusting a baby to a daycare center.

Shaken baby syndrome is completely preventable. Taking care of a child always comes up with lot of challenges especially for first time parents. Parents are always mixed up still it is never ever okay to shake a baby.
